About Tony Iommi
Born Feb 19, 1948 in Birmingham, England [W. Midlands]
Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi is one of the early pioneer's
of heavy metal, known famous for his creative guitar
riff's and heavy metal rhythm's, much of what were based
upon 5th (powerchords) chords.
Much of Tony's dynamic lead guitar solo work was based upon
and derived from his creative use of Pentatonic Minor Scales,
along with other minor scale combinations.
Born on February 19, 1948, in Birmingham, England, Tony
as a teenager began playing guitar after being inspired
by artist such as Hank Marvin & the Shadows.
By 1967, Iommi had played with various blues-based rock
bands, until he formed a group called Earth . Earth consisted
of his three old school acquaintances who were bassist Terry
"Geezer" Butler, drummer Bill Ward, and signer John "Ozzy"
Osbourne.
Tonys musical career nearly came to an end due to a horrible
accident at a sheet metal factory, when a machine sliced off
the tips of the fingers on his right hand.
Assuming that his guitar playing days over, a close friend
turned him onto gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt (who also lost
use of two fingers in a Gypsy caravan campfire accident).
This gave Tony enough inspiration to pick up the six-string
and give it another go. He adapted plastic tips that were
attached to the ends of his fingers. Shortly thereafter, Iommi
received an offer to join Jethro Tull's band in 1968,
which he accepted. After only a single performance with Jethro
Tull (playing the track "Song for Jeffrey" on the Rolling
Stones' never-aired TV special "Rock & Roll Circus"), Iommi
left Tull to return to his previous band Earth.
Due to another band who was already playing around England
at that time by the name of Earth, Tony and band mates were
forced to change their name. They chose the name "Black Sabbath"
which was taken from the classic horror movie. In thus...
Black Sabbath was born.
Early releases include 1969 self-titled debut, 1971's Paranoid
and Master of Reality, 1972's Vol. 4, and 1973's Sabbath Bloody
Sabbath, becoming one of the world's top hard rock bands.
Choice cuts include "Black Sabbath", "N.I.B.", "Paranoid",
"Iron Man", "War Pigs", "Into the Void," and "Children of the
Grave,"
Ozzy Osbourne's left Black Sabbath by 1979. Tony kept the name
Black Sabbath alive with the addition of a variety of vocalist
that included Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillian, and Glen Hughes.
