Lit * My Own Worst Enemy * Guitar Solo
This lesson is a good study of how "octaves" can be used for creating and composing a guitar solo. Guitarist Jimi Hendrix was famous for his use of "octaves"...see below. The guitar solo for My Own Worst Enemy is based upon ocatves. As a review, an "octave" is the same note played at a higher pitch, as shown in example #1 below. Example #1 E e octave A a octave e :-------------------------------------------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :-------9----------------------14-----------------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-7---------------------12------------------------| E :-------------------------------------------------| Example #2 * Jimi Hendrix * Purple Haze Octave fills before guitar solo octaves...... single played notes s s s e :-------------------------------------------------| B :---------------------8--------8------------------| G :-9--11-9--7--------7--------7--------------------| D :---------------7-9------7-9----------------------| A :-7--9--7--5--------------------------------------| E :-------------------------------------------------| To obtain a good octave sound, when fretting the note's for example on the A string, let your frethand index finger lightly touch and "mute" the D string so that the only notes you hear while playing are the notes on the A string and G string. This is the guitar solo in it's entirety to "Lit's" hit song "My Own Worst Enemy". e :-------------------------------------------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :-8-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9--8-9-9-9-9-9--11--11----------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-6-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7--6-7-7-7-7-7--9---9-----------| E :-------------------------------------------------| e :-------------------------------------------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :-8-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9--8-9-9-9-9-9--11--11----------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-6-7-7-7-7-7-7-7-7--6-7-7-7-7-7--9---9-----------| E :-------------------------------------------------| e :-------------------------------------------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :-11--13-13-13-13-13-13-13-13---------------------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-9---11-11-11-11-11-11-11-11---------------------| E :-------------------------------------------------| e :-------------------------------------------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :-11--13-13-13-13-13---14-14----------------------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-9---11-11-11-11-11---12-12----------------------| E :-------------------------------------------------| e :-------------------------------------------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :-14-16-16-16--16-18-18-18---18-16-16-16----------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-12-14-14-14--14-16-16-16---16-14-14-14----------| E :-------------------------------------------------| e :-------------------------------------------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :-16-14-14-14--14-13-13-13--13-14-14-14-----------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-14-12-12-12--12-11-11-11--11-12-12-12-----------| E :-------------------------------------------------| e :------------------------------0------------------| B :------------------------------0------------------| G :-14-13-13-13--13-11-11--------1------------------| D :------------------------------2------------------| A :-12-11-11-11--11-9--9---------2------------------| E :------------------------------0------------------| E e octave A a octave e :-------------------------------------------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :-------9----------------------14-----------------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-7---------------------12------------------------| E :-------------------------------------------------| Lyrics: Can we forget about the things I said when I was drunk? I didn't mean to call you that; I can't remember what was said or what you threw at me Please tell me,Please tell me why? My car is in the front yard And I'm sleeping with my clothes on I came in through the window last night And you're gone gone It's no surprise to me I am my own worst enemy, Cuz every now and then I kick the living sh*t out of me The smoke alarm is going off when there's a cigarette Still burning Please tell me why My car is in the front yard And I'm sleeping with my clothes on I came in through the window last night And you're gone gone Please tell me why My car is in the front yard And I'm sleeping with my clothes on I came in through the window last night It's no surprise to me I am my own worst enemy Cuz every now and then I kick the living sh*t out of me Can we forget about the the things I said when I was drunk I didn't mean to call you that
