Mick Mars Scales Lesson

Mick is one of my favorite guitarist. He is a real metal
ripper, full of exciting and powerful licks and chops. I was
lucky enough to have saw Mick play with the original line up
in May 27, 1984 at "The American Rock Festival" which was held
at Timber Ridge Ski Resort in Kalamazoo Michigan. He amazed me
by duplicating his solos live, just as they sounded on the
record. Many players add lib, or improvise, changing the solo
to an entire different sound. Mick was right on the money.
As a music instructor, I tend to favor guitarist who use alot
of scales and theory. This lesson, will show you some of those
scales, and how they are applied in use. You will find that
many rock bands (with the exception of Southern Rock, which
also uses much major pentatonic and diatonic scales also)
tend to stick closer to using minor scales.I have noticed that
many of Micks favorite choices of scales were besides the blues
minor scale, also the aeolian mode, and spanish phrygian.
Shown below are the actual scales in the key of A, followed
by an example of the beginning solo to the song "Take Me To
The Top"
This is a great exercise for your frethand, and also a good
exercise for working on techniques(hammer-on, pull-off, ect)
This solo exercise also uses ascending and descending ladder
riffs which are demonstrated during the actual beginning of
the solo. This lesson should give you a fairly good idea of
understanding how to combine minor scales and modes for a
classical / metal sound.
