About Megadeth

One time Metallica guitarist and founder of Megadeth,
guitarist Dave Mustaine is one of heavy metals top
rated guitar players. His playing style consist of
the use of heavy crunch power chords, to guitar
arpeggios that are played clean as well as used
for his guitar solo's which are often also a blend of
exotic guitar scales and modes played together in
combinations at what many reffer to as "lightning
speed" or "shredding". 

This Megadeth Guitar Lesson is a good primer to 
introduce you to a few Megadeth guitar songs, while
demonstrating the use of Dave Mustaine's combinations
of guitar techniques.

                Analyzing Guitar Licks

A frequently asked question among guitarist when learning
a solo to a song is "what scale, or scales were used to
create this guitar solo?" 

As a guitarist, knowing your scales is one of the most 
important tools, as theory and composition rely on scales, 
modes and their formulas that derive chords, arpeggios and 
ascending and descending runs, all of which may used as part 
of creating and playing a guitar solo. 

The major advantage to knowing guitar scales, is that each 
scale produces a different sound. The more you practice scales, 
the more you recognize their sounds.

For example: This helps train your ear to allow you to 
identify the difference by sound between a major scale 
compared to a minor scale, or identify the difference between 
a diminsihed scale as oppossed to a blues scale.

The more your ear develops to recognize the sound difference 
of each scale, the easier it becomes to learn, transcribe, as 
well as compose or create any given guitar solo. 

In thus, when learning a guitar solo, knowing your scales also 
allows you to "analyze" which scale(s) were used to create the 
guitar solo you are learning, transcribing, or creating and 
compsoing.

This exercise demonstrates the opening guitar lick to Megadeth's
"Wake Up Dead". Example #1 demonstrates the actual guitar lick.
Example #2 demonstrates F# minor blues scale, which was used
for the composition of this guitar solo lick.
