Guitar Fingertapping Lesson

Guitar Fingertapping became most recognized by guitar
great's Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads, and has scince
been adpated by many others.

The "idea" behind "fingertapping" is to use the index or
middle finger of the pickhand to "tap" a note to produce
the sound of a note. Many players use the edge of the
guitar pick for rapid fingertapping guitar tricks and
eccentrics. This is commonly referred to as "picktapping".

This lesson will give a good example of fingetapping E
pentatonic minor scale (E,G,A,B,D) and tips on how to
gain and maintain good control for speed and coordination
during a fingertapping sequence.

Also given is a very good example of fingertapping
E minor natural or pure scale, which is also known
as the E Aeolian mode of G major diatonic scale.

referrence to You Can Play Guitar Volume Three.

Tip:
It's best to find a "pivot" position where you can rest
the thumb of your pickhand on the neck of the guitar. This
will avoid a unwanted and uncoordinated "stabbing" motion,
and allow you to focus on hitting the exact notes you wish
to tap to produce the sound of those notes.

As E pentatonic minor scale is played beginning at
the 12th fret, a good place to rest the thumb of your
pickhand for a "pivot" position is around the 15th fret,
simply by resting your thumb on the top of the neck of
your guitar.

This will demonstrate the "pivot" positioning so far
discussed.

Here's that guitar lick in tablature.

Part Two * Fingertapping E Pentatonic Minor Scale

This shows the E pentatonic minor scale in the box shaped
position.
    E G A B D E G A B D E G

D :-----------------|-12--14----------|-----------------|
A :--------12--14---|-----------------|-----------------|
E :-12--15----------|-----------------|-----------------|

This shows a common extension of the notes which are
found in E penatonic minor scale, that are often used
  for guitar fingertapping sequence's.

E :-----------------|----------17-----|-----------------|

Exercise One
This guitar fingetapping lick demonstrates the sequence
used when combining the extended notes. This is a very
useful pattern to memorize and can be played in any key.
For example: To play this lick in the key of F#, simply
move all notes up 2 frets. To play this lick in the key
of G, move all notes up 3 frets...

   4x......... 4x....... 4x.....

G :-----------------|-----------------|-16--14---12-----|

E :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|

G :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
D :-17---14---12----|-----------------|-----------------|
A :-----------------|-17---14--12-----|-----------------|
E :-----------------|-----------------|-17---15--12-----|

E minor natural or pure scale
    E F# G A B C D E F#
e :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
B :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
G :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
D :-----------------|-----------------|-12--14--16------|
A :-----------------|-12--14--15------|-----------------|
E :-12--14--15------|-----------------|-----------------|

    G A B C D E F# G
e :-----------------|-----------------|-12--14--15------|
B :-----------------|-12--13--15------|-----------------|
G :-12--14----------|-----------------|-----------------|
D :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
A :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
E :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|

This shows how the extension of the notes of this scale
A,E,C,B,G,D may be added to create the following guitar
  fingertapping sequence.(See exercise #2)

   Extended notes:
    A E C B G D A
