Lesson Intro * Part One
Texas bluesman Johhny Winter is among the most
respected blues guitar players. He is well known
for his ability of many different techniques that
include guitar and vocal voicing's, open tuning's,
slide and bottleneck and steel guitar and lightning
fast blues licks, doublestop's and blues bends.
Born in Leland Mississippi on Febuary 23,1944,
Johnny Winter and brother Edgar Winter broke out in
the 1960's in the band (Johnny and The Jammer's),
and went to the south bar circut under the name "Texas
Guitar Slim" under the management of Steve Paul who
negotiated a record deal with Clive Davis at Columbia.
Both, Johnny and Edgar winded up having seperate solo
carrers as well as their team efforts together in
the 70's such as "Johnny and Edgar Winter Live".
One of his most intense recording's to date from the
early era included songwriter and brilliant guitarist
Rick Derringer, titled "Johnny Winter Live And..."
which included classic remakes of such hits as
"Good Morning Lil School Girl" and Chuck Berry's
version of "Johnny B Goode". (See below)
Johnny's influences include T-Bone Walker, B.B. King,
Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins,
Otis Rush, Luther Naley, Seymour Drugan, Chuck Berry,
Jimi Hendrix, Lightnin' Hopkins, Blind Lemon Jefferson
and Robert Johnson.
His favorite choice of guitars from past to current
include Gibson Les Paul Gold Top, Gibson Firebird,
Gibson Flying-V, a 66 Fender Mustang, and a National
Steel Guitar, and most recentley his Erlewine Lazer.
Rumored choice's of guitar amplifiers include Music
Man and occassional Fender amps. His favorite choice
of guitar effects include the Boss Chorus and MXR
Phaser. His choice of guitar strings include Dean
Markley 009. gauge and D'Addario 010. gauge.
Top choice of guitar picks are Gibson and Gibson Thumb-
picks(a major part of Johnny's playing style).
Part Two
This lesson teaches Johnny's version of the classic
rock hit "Rock-n-Roll Hoochie Koo". The intro teaches
both guitar parts combined to be played as one guitar,
including intro guitar solo's. Johnny's lead guitar part's
are mainly derived from A blues scale (A,C,D,D#,E,G).
Change #1 demonstrates Johhny's nearlike percussion
sound using alternate strums (d=downstoke u=upstroke)
while playing muted strings. Change #3 is a good example
of Johnnys blues doublestops, followed by the songs
first verse (including lead guitar fills and harmony)
on up to the chorus of the song, also including more
of Johhny Winters guitar solo technique's. Make note
of lead fill#1 on the chorus, which demonstrates his
use of an extreme string bend, that bends the note
a whole step and a half (the sound difference of 3
fret's higher) as was played during the lead guitar
intro solo. Note that lead guitar fill #3 also played
during the chorus is a good example of Johnny's
combination of guitar scales, demonstrating a combination
of A major pentatonic (which provides the southern twang
guitar sound), played in combination with A minor pentatonic
providing a straight forward blues sound.
Symbols Used: p=pull-off h=hammer-on s=slide
v=vibrato s=slide f+1/2=full bend plus half step
rel=release bend

If you've been looking for a good lead guitar blues ending,
this blues guitar lick taken from Johnny's classic song
