Johnny Cash Guitar Lesson
John Ray Cash ( February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003)
became a legend among American country music and rock fans
as a music singer, guitarist and songwriter.
Johnny was known for his deep, distinctive voice, the boom
chicka boom sound of his Tennessee Three backing band, and
his dark clothing and demeanor, which earned him the nickname
"The Man in Black." He started all his concerts with his
simple introduction: "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."
Fueled by his own rocky personal life and spiritual path,
much of Cash's music, especially that of his later career,
echoed themes of sorrow, moral tribulation and redemption.
Hits include "I Walk the Line", "Folsom Prison Blues",
"Ring of Fire", " Man In Black" and " Hurt". He also recorded
several humorous songs, such as "One Piece At A Time",
"The One on the Right is on the Left" and " A Boy Named Sue".

Tennessee Flat-Top Box Lyrics by Johnny Cash
In a little cabaret in a South Texas border town,
Sat a boy and his guitar, and the people came from all
around.
And all the girls from there to Austin,
Were slippin' away from home and puttin' jewelery in hock.
To take the trip, to go and listen,
To the little dark-haired boy who played the Tennessee flat
top box.
And he would play: (Instrumental)
Well, he couldn't ride or wrangle, and he never cared to
make a dime.
But give him his guitar, and he'd be happy all the time.
And all the girls from nine to ninety,
Were snapping fingers, tapping toes, and begging him:
"Don't stop."
And hypnotized and fascinated,
By the little dark-haired boy who played the Tennessee
flat top box.
And he would play: (Instrumental)
Then one day he was gone, and no one ever saw him 'round,
He'd vanished like the breeze, they forgot him in the little
town.
But all the girls still dreamed about him.
And hung around the cabaret until the doors were locked.
And then one day on the Hit Parade,
Was a little dark-haired boy who played the Tennessee flat
top box.
And he would play: (Instrumental)

Folsom Prison Blues Lyrics
E
I hear the train a comin' it's rollin 'round the bend
and I a'int seen the sunshine since I don't know when
A E
I'm stuck in Folsom Prison, and time keeps draggin' on.
B7 E
But that train keeps a movin' on down to-San-An-Tone
(same pattern for all verses)
When I was just a baby my mame told me, "Son
Always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns"
But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die
When I heat the whistle blowin' I hang my head and cry.
Well, if they freed me fom this prison, if that railroad
train was mine
I bet I'd move it all a little farther down the line
Far from Fulsom Prison, that's where I want to stay
And I'd let that lonsome whistle, blow my blues away

My daddy left home when I was three
C
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
D G
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
G
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
C
But the meanest thing that he ever did
D G
Was before he left, he went and named me Sue
Well, he must o' thought that is was quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue
Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made me a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man that give me that awful name
Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me Sue
Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: ?My name is 'Sue!' how do you do! Now you gonna die
Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down but, to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer
I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile
And he said: ?Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I know I wouldn't be there to help ya along
So I give ya that name and I said good-bye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's that name that helped to make you strong
He said: 'Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bit** that named you Sue
I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I come away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but sue! I still hate that name!

Walk the line
(A)I keep a (E7)close watch on this heart of (A)mine
(A)I keep my (E7)eyes wide open all the (A)time.
(A)I keep the (D)ends out for the tie that (A)binds
(A)Because you're (E7)mine, I walk the (A)line
I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line
As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line
You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine, I walk the line
