James Marshal Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington,
on November 27, 1942; an American of African, European,
Cherokee Indian and Mexican descent. Jimi spent many of
his early years staying with his grandmother, a full
blooded Cherokee Indian, in Canada.
His mother died when Jimi was 15, about the same time
Jimi began to take a serious interest in music and playing
the guitar. When Jimi was 12 he got his first electric
guitar and was began to change the music of the world.
At the age of 16, Jimi was thrown out of school. Stories
told that is was apparently for holding the hand of a white
girl in class. He began playing rock'n'roll in teenage bands
before voluntarily joining the army at 17.
After 14 months as a paratrooper, learning a lot about
falling and flying, he suffered an injury and was discharged.
He then decided to make music his career.
The following four years he spent touring the States
playing backup guitar for various R&B bands that included
Little Richard, Ike and Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, The Isley
Brothers and the late King Curtis and many others. He then went
to New York 's Greenwich Village where he recorded with the Isley
Brothers, Curtis Knight and various other artists.
In late 1965 he formed his first band "Jimmy James and the
Blue Flames". They worked the Village clubs where he was seen by
other musicians who recognized his incredible talent, and was
soon discovred by ex "Animals" bassist Chas Chandler.
Chas offered to become Jimi's manager and offered Jimi to accompany
him back to England.
In late 1966 was dominated by such bands such as The Who,
The Beatles, Cream (with Eric Clapton), Jimmy Page
and Jeff Beck.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience was formed with Noel Redding on bass
and Mitch Mitchell on drums. They toured Europe, breaking attendance
records at club after club, and then signed a recording contract.
Along with a series of singles that all gained top 10 rank, such as
"Hey Joe", "Purple Haze" and 'The Wind Cries Mary ' Jimi became a
star in England, and would soon becmome known as the guitarist who
made "Woodstock" famous with his flamboyant "Star Spangled Banner"
guitar solo that displayed guitar sounds that sounded like bombs being
dropped from a B-17 fighter plane.
As many have said in the past, many still agree today as often said:
"Knowone could play the guitar like Jimi Hendrix".
