Guitar Fingertapping

Pentatonic Fingertapping

A good scale to begin experimenting with the eccentric guitar trick referred to as "fingertapping", is the basic pentatonic box scale. For example: A minor pentatonic minor scale, shown below. Example #1 shows the names of the notes in this scale (A,C,D,E,G). Example #2 shows two of these notes (D note, shown on the small e string 10th fret), and the A note, shown 10th fret B string. This provides a most useful extended box shaped "pattern" for guitar fingertapping. As the frethand plays the notes derived from the basic "box" (frets 5 through 8), the pickhand "taps" the notes on the 10th fret of the small e and B string's. To produce the sound of the fingertapped guitar notes, most players choose to use either the index or middle finger of the frethand, others use the guitar pick. Example #1 Example #2 A C D E G A C D E G A C D A e :-----------------|----------5-8----|-------10--------| B :-----------------|-----5-8---------|-----------10----| G :-----------------|-5-7-------------|-----------------| D :---------5-7-----|-----------------|-----------------| A :-----5-7---------|-----------------|-----------------| E :-5-8-------------|-----------------|-----------------| Understanding that the basic pentatonic minor box scale was extended for this guitar trick, to create or improvise useful lead guitar patterns, or guitar licks, it's simply a matter of adding a few techniques such as hammer-on, and or pull-off, as shown in this next example. Example #3 t p h t p h e :-10--5--8--------|-----------------|-----------------| B :-----------------|-10---5---8------|-----------------| G :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| D :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| A :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| E :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| Changing Keys As with any any guitar lick, the possibility of changing keys is a prominent factor and very useful guitar tool. The example's below demonstrate how to move this guitar trick from the key of A to the key of B, simply by moving everything up 2 frets. Example #4 * Key of B e :-12--7--10-------|-----------------|-----------------| B :-----------------|-12--7--10-------|-----------------| G :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| D :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| A :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| E :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------| To play this lick in the key of C, move up 1 fret from B, to play in the key D, move up 2 frets from C, to play in the key of E, move up 2 frets from D and so on, etc...
