Lesson One Eddie Van Halen * Fingertapping Technique It's common knowledge that professional guitarist develop a favorite combination of techniques that lead to develop their sound, or "their style" of playing. This lesson dem- onstrates how Eddie Van Halen commonly uses the combination of techniques 1)Tap 2)Pull-Off 3)Hammer-On. The major scale is known for it's bright and cheerful sound, as oppossed to minor scales which are known for their dark and erie sounds. It's recom- mended when learning this lick, to break it into small parts that you can memorize focusing on the frethand movement for frethand coordination using the fingerings indicated below. You can hear this songfill at the end of the 1st chorus in the song "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar. To perform this technique, make a full bend on the 3rd fret G string, then "fingertap" the note on the 11th fret, adding vibrato with your tapping finger. This lick will add some quality flash technique to your playing. Begin by fingertapping the 6th fret small e string, then pulling off to the 3rd fret, small e string. The note played on the 5th fret b string, is played simply by hammering-on (no picking required).Play this guitar fingertap lick 6 times as a lead pattern, ending with a pick harmonic on the 3rd fret G string, with heavy vibrato. Follow up with guitar lick #2 which is analyzed as being derived from C mixo blues scale, which consist once again of the major 3rd. These guitar tricks and knowledge of arpeggios, scales and the major 3rd, will make your guitar soloing stand out among others. It is taught that Aeolian is the minor relative scale, which produce's harmony to C major. If you were to play the 7 modes of C major, in the A minor position you would begin in this order. Aeolian, Locrian, Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian. This lesson begins by tapping in descending order with Aeolian. This guitar fingertapping sequence is focused on a series of 6 notes that begins by fingertapping tha actual "blues" note, which is C#. This blues note is derived from the flatted 5th interval of G major diatonic scale. Sequence #1 plays the 3 notes C#,C,A#. Sequence #2 plays the 3 notes A#,G,F.Sequence #3 & #5 are the same notes played in octaves as was sequence #1. This same principal works with single notes, which will allow you to perform some very eccentric special effect type sounds.
