Part 2
This lesson concludes the harmonic minor ladder ascend
to the 3rd octave, as shown below. Add this to the previous
lesson, to combine as one. (Shown as exercise #1)
Exercise #2 shows how you can break out of the ladder ascend
and apply techniques to begin creating or adding additional
guitar licks.

Part 4 * Guitar Licks Lesson 1
This lesson will focus on picking and becoming more familiar
with this scale. Alot of players who are recognized for their
knowledge of scales, use this scale to obtain a classical sound.
Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony McAlpine, Vinnie Moore, Randy Rhoads
and many more. Its common to to play this scale muted to obtain
this type of sound, as well as using alternate picking.
Alternate picking meaning to begin picking down, up, down, up
ect.. throughout this guitar lick.

Exercise 2 * Harmonic Minor Licks Lesson 2
This exercise applies the same principal as above, and
continues to the second octave. Once again, if you like
the playing styles of Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore,
Tony McAlpine and other great guitarist who are known for
a classical "Mozart/Bach/Beethoven" sound, this lesson s
hould help get you in the right direction. This lick is in
the key of A.

Exercise 3 * Harmonic Minor Licks Lesson 3
This lesson is focused on speed and technique. The first
series of pull-offs are meant to be played fast, followed
by the fingertapping segments which are also performed at
a faster speed as well.

Exercise 4
This lesson is focused on how to gain speed using techniques.
This lesson should be considered an advanced lesson. If
you've never tried playing licks like this one, I'm sure
you'll find it challenging. But keep in mind that if you
want to improve your playing, you wont do so by constantly
playing "easy" favorites. Licks like this one will not only
make you stand out among players, but will also demonstrate
the incredible hand strength that is required to perform
such licks. In otherwords, you'll need to be somewhat
agressive using the frethand techniques. When pulling off,
tug hard on the strings, and when hammering on, allow your
fingers to give a good thump to produce the sounds of the
notes. You can then "tame things down a bit" and focus on
finesse and control to allow smoothness in your overall sound.

If you have a guitar with a whammy bar, try adding an open
string dive bomb on the Large E string open, shown above.
Exercise 5
Trills
Review: A trill is using the techniques of hammer-on
and pull-off in continous motion. There is no limit on
the amount of times to play each trill, as you will
discover when using this technique while jamming with
others, that depending on what song you are playing or
composing, the tempo may change as the drummer may choose
yo play a slow, medium or fast drum beat, allowing you
to obtain a feel for the actual timing.

Playing Licks In Octave
This lesson demonstrates the movement that you may have
watched other great players perform, when they seem to
magically move from one position to another. From playing
a solo beginning lower on the neck, then moving way up
to the higher frets. This is often done by playing the same
scale in an octave. Octave=same note(s) in a higher position.
Shown below is A harmonic minor scale at the 5th fret, then
shown again in the octave position, followed by a lick in
"Low A" then repeated in "High A". These 2 given examples
clearly demonstrate this technique. The notes in this scale
are A,B,C,D,E,F,G#,A, then repeated.

Knowing Your Fretboard
This lesson and the lesson that will follow, is a good way
to test your fretboard knowledge. Are you capable of playing
this lick in other positions, located at other frets on the
fretboard? This tool can be a great advantage when composing
or improvising a solo. The 2 best ways you can learn this tool
are by 1) knowing the "names of the notes" and 2) using your
ear as your guide. This covers 2 important tools at once.
1) Fretboard knowledge, and 2) Ear Training. For now, focus on
learning this lick, and becoming familiar with the sound.
The next lesson will follow up , showing you how and where
you can find this same lick in other positions at other
locations.
