Exotic Guitar Scales

As all guitar scales are based upon and derived from the
major scale formula which is built upon intervals, to make
the maximum potential use of learning how to play exotic
guitar scales will rely upon memorizing the guitar scale
intervals in each scale as well as the names of the notes
that are played in each scale.
More about scales and interval's

Also keeping in mind that there is allways more than one way
to fret the notes (use alternate finering's and position's)
when playing any and all guitar scales. See example #1

A Major Diatonic Scale Position #1
This scales intervals consist of:
 Tonic Octave
   1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
   A B C# D E F# G# A
e :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
B :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
G :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
D :-----------------|--4--6--7--------|-----------------|
A :-------4--5--7---|-----------------|-----------------|
E :-5--7------------|-----------------|-----------------|

Octave Position's
It's good practice to play all guitar scales in octave
positions. The term "octave" is defined as the same note at
a higher pitch. One easy way of finding octaves is to
play the same note, 12 frets higher. This example shows
Position #1 played as octaves.

    A B C# D E F# G# A
e :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
B :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
G :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
D :-----------------|-----------------|-16--18--19------|
A :-----------------|-16--17--19------|-----------------|
E :-17-19-----------|-----------------|-----------------|

A good practice habit is to begin to experiment and explore
the possibilities of other positions that you can also find
the same notes that lie inside of guitar scales. This will
depend on how well you know and have memorized the notes
on your guitar fretboard.
See You Can Play Guitar Volume One.

For example, here is A Major Diatonic Scale in a higher
ocatve position.

    A B C# D E F# G# A
e :-----------------|-12--14--16--17--|-----------------|
B :----12--14--15---|-----------------|-----------------|
G :-14--------------|-----------------|-----------------|

Building Guitar Licks From Scales
A very common method of building guitar licks and guitar solos
is to add "guitar techniques" to guitar scales. This could be
as simple as adding a few hammer-on's in sequence as shown below.

         h h h h h h
e :-----------------|-----------------|-12--14--16------|
B :----12-14-15-----|-12--14--15------|-----------------|
G :-14--------------|-----------------|-----------------|
D :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
A :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
E :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|

      h h
e :-12--14---16-----|----17-----------|-----------------|
B :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
G :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|
D :-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|

Exotic Guitar Scales

Although there are many more, this lesson is focused on
the Arabian Guitar Scale, the Chinese Guitar Scale, the
Egyptian Guitar Scale, the Hindu Guitar Scale, and the
Hungarian Gypsy Guitar Scale. To learn more about guitar
scales and theory, and how guitar scales are constructed
see You Can Play Guitar Volume 3.

Each Exotic Guitar Scale is taught below, with a sample guitar
lick to help give you a better idea of the sound's that you
can develop from the use of each Exotic Guitar Scale.

Remember to also explore playing these in their octave
position's.
