Country Twang Guitar Tablature
This lesson we'll take a look at how to get the country
twang sound. This sound comes from the Pentatonic Major
Scale. This is a 5 note scale, as is pentatonic minor.
We will be learning this scale in the key of A.The notes
are shown below the tab.Let's first begin by learning to
play the scale ascending and descending.
A Pentatonic Major (ascending)

B :-----------------------------2---5--------------------
G :-----------------------2--4---------------------------
D :-----------------2--4---------------------------------

E :-------5----------------------------------------------

B :---------------5--2-----------------------------------
G :---------------------4--2-----------------------------
D :--------------------------4--2------------------------
A :-------------------------------4--2-------------------
E :-------------------------------------5----------------
The Twang Sound
To get the best results from this scale, it's best if you
keep returning to the tonic note A. The sound that makes
the twang sound is produced by bending the second interval
(the second note, which is a B note).Let's try an easy
exercise, by descending the scale and bending the second
interval, located on the 2nd fret, A string.
Exercise#1
f = full bend
e :-5-2--------------------------------------------------
B :-----5-2----------------------------------------------
G :---------4-2------------------------------------------
D :-------------4-2--------------------------------------
A :-----------------4-2----------------------------------
E :---------------------5--------------------------------
Now that you have the basic idea, let's try exercise 2. In
this exercise, we'll be bending the octave of the note B
then returning to the original note B for another bend.
This next exercise should clearly demonstrate the country
twang sound. I placed the fingerings under the tab, to help
you. As you bend the 4th fret (g string) keep the note bent
then play the the 5th fret of the b and small e string, which
are both played by barring (holding down both strings) with
your pinky. Then ,re-pick the note that is already bent on the
4th fret g string,(this can be reffered to as a ghost bend =gb,
and release the bend, as you play the notes on the 5th fret on
the b and small e string. So, all 3 notes are played, as you
are releasing the string bend to it's normal sound.
Exercise#2

e :-5-2---------5-----5----------------------------------
B :-----5-2-----5-----5----------------------------------
G :----------4-------4----2------------------------------
D :---------------------------4--2-----------------------
A :-----------------------------------2------------------
E :---------------------------------------5--------------
Some good rhythm chords to practice are A major, B minor
barre chord, and E major open. Try strumming each chord
a few times in this order A,A, Bminor, Bminor, E major
E major, A , A (start over) to create a rhythm that you
can record. Then hit rewind, and try playing the licks you've
learned in this lesson along with the rhythm you've created.
You can also hear this same scale, and the rhythm chords
demonstrated during the solo to the song "Friends In Low
Places" by Garth Brooks.
Although my favorite playing style was always Hendrix, and
Rhoads and blues guitar, a favorite student of mine Daryl Brown
had turned me on to Nashvilles hired gun Brent Mason.
I was amazed at his lightning fast fingers, and amazing twang
sounds. One of the most incredible players I have ever heard to
this day. Which explains why Brent has been hired as the studio
guitarist to play the lead tracks on most of the big hits by
Brooks and Dunn, Alan Jackson, and a whole lot more.

Country Guitar Modes & Scales
When first learning guitar modes and scales, it's often
difficult in the beginning as to how to properly use both,
scales and modes in combination. This lesson demonstrates
the common use of G mixolydian mode played in combination
with G pentatonic major. G mixolydian is also determined
as "major", which makes this mode a prime choice to be
played in combination with G pentatonic major.
These scales and modes combinations are some of the trade-
marks of today's hottest Nashville guitar players such as
Brent Mason and Brent Rowan as well as they are traits of
player's from the "old school" of country such as Marty
Stewart and Willie Nelson, only too mention a few.
