Bass Guitar Interview

We asked Bob Daisley to offer insight and share information on five of his favorite bass influence's and the reason's why. Bob replied with these five picks below that will hopefully give you an idea of some of the great innovators who helped develop the sound of modern day bass guitar. YCPG: What are 5 of your favorite bass guitar players? BD: Five of my favourite bass players would have to be : (not in order of preference) 1. Paul McCartney, because of his melodic thoughtful notation, his great sound (possibly helped by producer George Martin) with which ever bass he used - the Hofner or the Rickenbacker 4001S. Certainly an influence on me. 2. Jack Bruce, because of his aggressive approach in sound and performance. He overplayed often, but it was never meaningless waffle, always a musical statement that created a mood and emotion to the song. I love the growly sound he got from the Gibson EB3 bass and Marshall stacks back in the days of Cream. Check out his first solo album too - "Songs for a Taylor" - brilliant. 3. Ron Wood, another influence in my playing. I love what he did on those early Jeff Beck albums "Truth" and "Beckola" - I don't think he played much bass after that, only a few spots on some of the Rod Stewart records. He also used a growly sound and was a very adventurous and aggressive player. I think he's more well known for his guitar playing from the days of The Faces and now The Rolling Stones (also a very stylish guitarist) but he's (was) certainly a great bassist as well. 4. Willie Weeks, who starred on bass on the album "Donny Hathaway Live", recorded back in around 1972. He does a solo in one of the songs that's just so tasteful and rhythmic - it just blew my mind the first time I heard it. It never fails to do the same whenever I listen to it. Great punchy Fender bass sound too. 5. John Paul Jones, who I think was a major part of the Led Zeppelin sound. I think the best sound he got was during the time when he used a Fender Jazz bass and an Acoustic amp. Obviously he was influenced by people like James Jamerson (another brilliant bassist) from the Tamla Mowtown records but he had such a great style and sound that really gave Zeppelin their "balls". There are really too many great bass players to narrow it down to just five, but these are five of my favourites, and there are many more. Thanks. Cheers, Bob
