Bass Guitar Scales Lesson Circle Of Hands
Circle Of Hands is based on the scale E minor natural or
pure which is also the E aeolian mode of G major, considered
the relative minor of G major diatonic. However you will
notice a variety of notes selected from other minor modes
as well. For example the F note (shown as part 3) which
may be considered to be taken from the E Phrygian mode,
(E,F,G,A,B,C). This may be considered as a choice selection
of notes, using combinations of minor scales. Many times
a trained musician who knows his theory well, will get hung
up on "sticking" to a scale or mode in attempt to write
the perfect song, allowing themselves to only use the
notes from the scale or mode of the song they may be
composing. This often creates a "mechanical" sound and leaves
the song empty with no "feel" or "flow".
Bob and I had discussed this during our last conversation,
and had agreed that the best of songs require emotion, and
adding feel, and a special touch. So, keep in mind when
composing that it is ok to use combinations of various
scales in combination. Allow yourself room for trial and
error, until you find exactly what you're after.
Bob begins with a nice build up as entering the song
intro, which then adds some very tasteful song fills
throughout the modulation of this song. Note the effect
of the basic yet however so very effective bass slide
which follows after the vocal line "can you hear me".
I was extremely impressed by the choice of notes Bob
had selected for the outro leading into the second verse
which adds an "off-key center". While the song rides a
steady A note during the course of this bass line, the
outro shall be considered to use the A Dorian mode, which
includes the note F#, which creates this particular odd
and dissonant "off-key center" sound.

Special Comments by Bob Daisley
Jeff Watson instigated that song musically with the opening
riff idea, then we worked out the rest of it together. I came
up with the title and subject matter and wrote most of the
lyrics - Jeff and I did a few lines together.(you can take
that any way you like, ha !)
This song is about reaching loved ones "on the other side"
through a se'ance - hence the "circle of hands". The bass I
used on that track was an old Hamer of Jeff's that just sounded
right. A lot of the songs on that album "Planet Earth" are less
aggressive and less ballsy than other things we've done - we
were in a kind of "Pink Floyd" kind of mood and wanted a gentler
approach that was more philosophical in song content. I can still
listen to that album and enjoy what we did and how it turned out.
It's one of those albums that the more you listen to it, the more
you "get it" and enjoy it.(hopefully) All I can add to that is,
whom ever listens to it, I hope you enjoy it !
All the best, Bob Daisley.
