24 Fret Guitar

Guitar Scales For 24 Fret Guitar

Many of the early electric guitar's were constructed offering only 19 frets, others offering up to 21 frets. The guitar's with only 19 frets allowed the early electric players to play the highest note available on the small e string, a B note. Guitars with 21 frets offered players the highest available note C#. As guitars evolved and went through many changes and custom spec- ifications in a constant and still to this day, ongoing attempt to create a better playing and better sounding instrument, things continued and ...continue to progress. Eventually the 22 fret guitar was developed, offering players the highest note found on the small e string which is D. This note D, when played as a full string bend, or whole step bend became the high note "E". Yet until the birth of the 24 fret guitar, there was still not a guitar that began with Low E (Largest string open) and ended with the high note of "E" octave which would allow a guitarist to play a full 4 octave scale or run pattern. Thus was born the 24 fret guitar which allowed players to do just that.(See example one below) which shows the "Tonic" note E and also indicates the location of the 1st,2nd,3rd, and 4th octaves. Symbols used below are as indicated: T=Tonic Note 1=1st Octave 2=2nd Octave Example #1 T 1 2 3 4 e :----------------------12----------24-------------| B :-------------------------------------------------| G :---------------9---------------------------------| D :-------------------------------------------------| A :-------7-----------------------------------------| E :-0-----------------------------------------------| This lesson explores and teaches how to play guitar scales in the key of E for a 24 fret guitar, which may allow a player to acheive the high E note simply by playing the guitar scales in normal patterns or positions without having to bend strings. This is a great tool and asset for playing lead guitar solo's and being able to obtain those "high end" peircing sounds, like players such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Yngwie Malmsteen obtain when playing a lead guitar solo. This demonstrates the scale played in it's normal position with the "Tonic" note on the 5th string, A string.
